Jobs Happy Hour was held on Wednesday 19 October in the MQ Marquee. This highly successful event was the culmination of ‘Employable YOU’ – a five-week series of career-related activities for undergraduate and postgraduate students to actively engage in the employability aspect of their MQ student experience.
Jobs Happy Hour provided industry partners with the opportunity to meet Macquarie students in a friendly environment and promote their current job opportunities, including summer jobs, internships, casual or part-time jobs, work-integrated learning activities, full-time jobs, or graduate positions/programs. Students were also able to discuss career paths, employer expectations and industry trends in preparation for their careers. It also provided a platform for industry partners to connect with key Macquarie staff to better understand how their organisation can engage with our programs.
The event was well attended by 350 students, and employers gave particularly positive feedback that students were well-prepared and professionally presented for the event.
Post-event feedback:
“I wanted to share that I thoroughly enjoyed the Jobs Happy Hour event. It was quite honestly, the best Career fair event I have been to. Really well run and made fun and vibrant too. It was great to hear from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and the Mayor and engaging the council really built a sense of community around Macquarie. The number of employer groups was ideal as it had a more intimate and local feel.“
Feedback from a Macquarie Park employer who attend Jobs Happy Hour 2022
“The event from our perspective was a success. I have no direct hires to report on as yet and being early days. Though we have many students to follow up with. The energy of the students was fantastic, I think the length of the expo suited students and stall holders as well. We have been to many expos where they are all day and it is quite draining for all. The Employability & Graduate Success team have been great to date and happy to continue the relationship. Also, be involved as much as we can with any opportunities. Congratulations and hope the event lived up to your expectations also.“

A post-event student survey indicated that 80% of respondents intended to apply for roles on offer and 72% said they would recommend the event to a friend. Questions about next actions indicated that respondents will self-manage follow-up with applications as well as updating resumes and LinkedIn – a positive sign about students having self-agency and confidence in terms of their employability and finding employment.
